'No More Page 3'.

'No More Page 3'.

What is the video about?

The video is about stereotypes that are created like woman aren't legible or aren't physically able to play sports like men. They also showed how woman in magazines and newspapers are 'manufactured' and always try to make themselves look good and care about their image.

"Our volunteers were cutting out pictures for 5 1/2 hours and in that time we found no sportswoman featured in their sports pages. Not one. We may not have got round to every single edition (the rules of the experiment were if we cut one photo out of an edition we’d cut every photo out of that edition, but we’d stop when the wall was full) so perhaps we missed the one or two images in their extensive coverage of women in the Commonwealth Games and Wimbledon tennis, but honestly, we were as surprised as The Sun to find no women in their sports pages."

Women are seen as objects in society and aren't given much respect from a feminists' point of view. However, the fact that they are in those magazines and newspapers showing that explicit content shows that they don't respect themselves because they are portraying themselves in this way.

Gratifications theory (Blumler & Katz)

Gratifications Theory (Blumler & Katz)

In 1974 Blumler and Katz stated that individuals might choose and use media for several different purposes. For example;Diversion, which is essentially the escape from everyday problems and routine.Personal relationships, which is using the media for emotional and other interaction. Personal identity, which is finding yourself reflected in the media and learning behaviours and values from this. Lastly, Surveillance, which is information that could be useful for living such as weather reports, financial news or holiday bargains. In addition, since then the uses and gratifications have been extended with new media such as video games and the internet.

Diversion
EastEnders is a prime time TV Soap that is watched by a large audience. It helps people with diversion because this show consist of dramatic and emotional scenes with a flowing story line. The audience focus on it so closely that they forget the lines of their own reality which helps them deal with day to day problems.
Personal relationships

in some cases Big brother helps people build emotional affection to characters. This is because the audience will be watching a bunch of people living inside one house and therefore, some members of the audience may start to feel a particular way about one of the many characters.

Personal identity

People may find themselves reflected or may possibly learn behaviours and values from The Apprentice. This is because this show contains many strong and inspiration entrepreneurs that people may aspire to be like. Also, the main person in this show is referred to as an Business Icon therefore people may want to watch this to learn specific behaviours and values.

Surveillance

Sky news fits into this category because people would get their weather, traffic news and financial news from here. It is also very convenient,

MEST2 Research and planning

Five opening scenes from television programmes aimed at an audience similar to the brief (E4 18-35 year olds). This means the programmes will conform to Channel 4's remit to “foster the new and experimental in television.  It will encourage pluralism, provide a favoured place for the untried and encourage innovation in style content perspective and talent on and off screen”.

Top Boy

Top Boy is a British television drama series that was first broadcast on Channel 4. Season 1 was broadcast over consecutive nights, from 31 October to 3 November 2011. Set on the fictional Summerhouse housing estate in Hackney, the series follows the lives of a group of people involved in drug dealing and street gangs.

Overall, this opening scene brings a lot of suspense and asks the audience a lot of questions. Why are they're very young people selling drugs? Who are these people? Why did they get robbed? Why is the boy just watching casually?

Youngers

Youngers is a British comedy drama series. It began airing on E4 on 20 March 2013. The opening scene is of two young boys who are sitting their GCSE's and they're on their way to their results day. It is a classic because it shows the difference between the two characters lives. Yemi realised he has to work hard and was studying hard whereas, jay was slacking off and messing about and this shows the classic difference between the two young boys' lives. This is interesting because this is certainly the case for many youngsters in today's British society.

Inbetweeners

The Inbetweeners is a British sitcom that originally aired on E4 from 2008 to 2010. Created and written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, the show followed the life of suburban teenager Will McKenzie (Simon Bird) and his three friends at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. The episodes involved situations of school bullying, broken family life, indifferent school staff, male bonding, and largely failed sexual encounters.

Will the main character faces many different obstacles throughout his time at his new school like being bullied by the popular school bully. The way will deals with these obstacles is funny abstract and very entertaining so hooks the audience between the target age.

My Murder

My murder is a British TV series that is based around a true story of a young boy coming out of a jail spell and trying to turn his life around. Part of him changing his life around involved a girl that he trusted but she ended up setting him up because of her boyfriend who was part of this gang. Shak the victim of the murder and the main character is the narrator of his own story this creates suspense and tension because the audience listen to him telling his own story on how he got murdered.

Preliminary Evaluation

Preliminary Evaluation

Task

We were given a preliminary task for AS media. We had to create a short video clip (30 seconds long) that involved the different camera work i.e. 180 degree rule. The clip had to include a character taking part in a conversation containing at least two pieces of dialogue. My groups video was based around two characters who aren't on good terms being in an awkward situation of being in the same toilet at the same time alone, hence the title (Conflict). During this time there is tension between them and it is intriguing to find out what is happening between them and why they have conflict and what will happen when they're all alone which makes the audience question this which grabs them at the same time. The whole storyline and concept of our idea I think was really good because we thought about what would actually grab the audience's attention and by having conflict with someone in an awkward tight room this would elevate tension instantly and grab the reader because the action and enigma code would come in very nicely in this. This is because the audience will be going through a questioning phase in their head i.e. what are they arguing about? why are they arguing? what is going to happen? are they going to resolve their differences?how?

WWW-

We came up with a very good concept which could possibly be developed to become a better storyline for our final coursework. We used the shot reverse shot really well during the conversation. Also, we had very clear and easy to understand audio. We used the sound bridge very well the the tap running in the toilets. Also, one piece of camera work that was really clever and intriguing was when the characters are both looking at each other through the mirror and the shot allows the audience to see both the characters from one mirror which is very hard to do.

EBI-

We broke the 180 degree rule when The first character turned towards the second character in the toilet. Secondly, we didn't have a shot showing the location of the scene. Therefore, the viewers were confused about what was going in the shot. The placements of the characters was confusing for the audience.Another thing we could've improved is that the conversation was a bit forced because Mansour asks Ahmed "Are you cool" and he replies with "Yeah" then he says "DON'T ASK ME QUESTION".This shows that he is a bit confused and a bit edgy and we don't want that reaction. Also, it creates confusion for the audience with the script because he contradicts himself by answering the question but saying to the other main character from the clip "don't ask me questions?" this is very misleading because it makes the story go off task because it doesn't allow the conversation between the two characters flow which disengages the audience which then makes them wonder if the conversation is supposed to happen in this manner.

WWW:

  • You're picking out the right elements from the clip- now we just need to add to our analysis to move into level 3+

EBI:

  • Depth of analysis is a weakness...you need to say more about footsteps sound FX then we wonder where he's going. It's loud, dominant, slow, dangerous etc.
  • More media language + theory...enigma codes;
  • Editing needs revision.

Q4 Re-write-Editing

The director of the film uses editing to create drama and tension in this clip, the first example of this is during the slow motion editing in the clip. This aspect of editing is used to create tension throughout the clip or to show or tell the audience something important is going to happen and gives the audience time to concentrate on that specific moment of the clip. This is the shot of the cigarette falling into the petrol to create the huge roar of fire this increases the emotional impact and gives the audience a feeling on this and makes them ask questions.

Dependency theory

1.)Media Information or Entertainment?

Personally I use the internet for both knowledge and entertainment. I use the internet for social networking sites like Twitter which give me entertainment from the people I follow and things all around the world. I also use it for information because I go on sites like BBC news and sky sports to find out the latest information on footballers and what transfers are taking place. So the media is very useful for me on both aspects.

I want to find out how my favourite team (Chelsea) are getting on in the premier league and see if they are improving and what goes on behind the cameras which is always entertaining and a laugh.

2.) Dependent on the media?

Although the media is a massive part of my life I do feel that I can live without it and I don't depend on it too much. I believe that I is a privilege and it isn't something that I absolutely need in my life. This is because most of my media is used for entertainment purposes which can be put on hold.

3.)Has our Dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years? how?

I believe our dependence on the media has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. A couple of good examples are. Firstly, 10 years ago people would find it hard to get information about news and weather because technology wasn't as good or advanced as it is today now people rely on their phones and tablets for information whilst their on the way to work or school because over time technology companies like apple have found ways to make access to internet and other features more convenient for their customers. Secondly, 10 years ago there wasn't as many platforms to get reviews for games, films or TV as there are today online.

HOMEWORK

Playing violent video games for 20 minutes a day can encourage aggressive behaviour

This article links to the hypodermic needle theory because the media source (Video games) is injected into the consumers brains, in this case the article quoted

"Playing a violent video game for just an hour over a three-day period is enough to increase aggressive behaviour, according to a new study"

I agree with this to an extent because with young children many are influenced very easily so will find it tempting to copy what they see because they think its "cool". On the other hand, many will find it normal and aren't easily influenced by this. This applies to the older generation because they seem to have more knowledge of their surrounding so aren't easily influenced when playing a game like call of duty.

Jamal Edwards: Amateur film-maker turned Multi-Millionaire

This links to the two step flow model because this one person Jamal Edwards who created his own media channel called SBTV has had the power to promote artist through his channel, which has brought him publicity and profit because they have become recognised so are able to rap through concerts and bring Jamal Edwards a shout or recognition which will make his channel recognised and more watched which will increase his profit. He puts up the music he thinks is good or has some sort of potential and people trust his opinion therefore he influences the views of others.

This is an example showing a young boy playing a video game and being influenced we see this through his reaction while dying in the game in this video you can clearly see aggressiveness which the game has taught him so in a way you can say violent games will influence children to become aggressive and violent.

This is a video of a prank played on the public of a man scaring the public with a this shows that from what people see on TV this may influence them to go out and do the same because they see that the makers of this video gain entertainment happiness so this may make them feel as if they find this funny and may go out and do this for their own reasons and satisfaction.

Narrative Analysis

Nike Advert "The last game"

Barthes Theory

The creating and making of the clones in the advert creates an effect because they're real players but cloned versions which promotes and makes the advert feel more realistic and popular.

Action Code- this is the climax in the advert when the football players are being "taken over by robots" and they try 'bring football back' this is the action code because it the players are active and try bring their sport back which is intense and creates and builds up tension.

Equilibrium- young kids enjoying football and watching their role models (football players) play and they try emulate them when playing in their favela's with other children.

Disequilibrium- the real/human footballers are being cloned by better versions of themselves and are taking away their sport

New equilibrium- This is the part when Ronaldo which is an ex football player calls the players all and gathers them and starts motivating them to face the robots in 'the last game' they agree to do so and win in the end and restore the sport back to how it was previously which is a happy ending for everyone.

Propp's Theory

This advert is a prime example because it has a villain this is the man creating the clones of these players and is destroying football the sport. The hero in this advert would be all of the football players and their manager in the advert who is Ronaldo they are the hero's because they aim to restore football and claim it back.

Fast Furious 6 Trailer

Enigma- the plot of the story is briefly explained and key moments from the movie are shown to give the audience an experience of how its like but they try not to give away everything because the movie would be pointless. They try to give just enough so that the audience is satisfied and is willing to pay to watch this movie.

Action- this is a key aspect of the movie because the movie includes lots of action and violence throughout and the trailer shows the audience what kind of action the film contains.

Todorov equilibrium
Equilibrium

The street people are on the streets having a good time and are enjoy racing. They usually race for money and do all sorts of missions.

Disequilibrium-A member of the FBI goes to them and speak to the group leader who in this case is Vin Diesels character and convinces them to help on a big job to catch another criminal.

New Equilibrium- They work together and manage to catch the criminals and stop them but also seem to have a new problem on the way that introduced at the end of the movie which is a cliff hanger to their new movie coming out in 2015.

Gotham: Birth of Batman

Enigma:

How did Batman come to life?
Who's is Batman in this situation?

Todorov

Equilibrium- a calm family is on a day out together roaming around the city streets.

Disequilibrium- The villain, who is the man with the weapon stops them and is involved in a robbery. He ends up shooting the child's two parents in front of him.

New equilibrium_ this is the birth of Batman because he wants to stop crimes like this and be the cities dark hero.

Propp:

The Villain: The criminal with the weapon
The Donor:N/A
The Helper: Robin, Batman's future partner
The Princess: 'The city' because Batman's job is to now protect the city
The Dispatcher:N/A
The Hero: Batman
The False Hero: N/A

Heat (1995) Full Bank Robbery Shootout HD Scene Editing Task

Heat (1995) Full Bank Robbery Shootout HD Scene

Firstly, the use of the close up on the main character is very effective and is key in trying to build up tension. This shot was a close up of the main characters eyes. This is very effective because it makes the audience engage with this because it makes them wonder where this character is looking and what he's going to do next. The parallel non digetic music that went with this close up also builds up tension because it compliments the frame of the characters eyes and makes the audience even more engaged with this clip.

another major aspect of the built tension in this clip was when the three main characters who were involved in this robbery of a bank make eye contact and the close up of all three of their eyes was shot creates effect because this instantly informs the audience watching this that something eventful or something dangerous is going to happen in these leading minutes. Also the medium close up of the man putting on the black mask over his head tells the audience that this criminal is ready to commit a crime because he wants to cover or hide his identity from the law which means he is definitely breaking the rules and going against the law.

Also there was a close up of the gun that the man was holding which tells us that this character is dangerous and is willing to use this weapon on a member of the public or the staff working there to get what he wants which we see in the middle of the clip is the money within the bank. This builds tension because it leaves the audience wondering whether this character is going to use this lethal weapon or not.

The use of the digetic sound of the gun is very effective because it creates an atmosphere and scenery because it shows people involved in the shootings reaction to this digetic sound which gives the audience a way to feel so builds up tension and gives the characters a way to feel or some emotion to this digetic sound.

Towards the end of this clip there was a  long shot of children running this gives the audience emotion because it shows fear of the children running away from the gunshots that they hear. This is effective because it shows the audience peoples emotion in this scenery which gives the audience an idea of how it feels to be around this atmosphere which is full of danger and fear.

One effective shot in the middle of this clip was an over the shoulder shot of one of the main characters shooting someone this is effective because it gives the audience an insight of what this character is aiming at or trying to shoot. This builds tension and drama because it makes the audience see whether or not the character shoots the target accurately.

In the action scene with the guns there was a fundamental part of editing which created a big effect. This is when there was a slow motion shot during the gunshots. This was the slow motion shot of the main character looking at something and quickly reacting to it but in slow motion. They done this because the shots were very fast and this is an important shot so they slowed it down to make sure the audience capture this moment very well. This is a key moment in the clip obviously because the editors of this clip made sure that the audience see how the character reacted to someone in his sight and pulled his gun out to aim at them. This builds tension because the slow motion makes the audience wonder what's going to happen next and fills them up with curiosity because they want to know if this character reacted in time to intercept the bullet or not which is a key moment in the clip.

Also, at the end of clip there is another slow motion shot of one of the characters concentrating to try and shoot another opponent the slow motion was added because the man was holding a child and the slow motion shows the characters focus to try and shoot the opponent not the child. This is effective because it leaves the audience wondering whether or not the child is going to be shot but luckily the child is safe and taken by the character which is a moment of relief for the audience. This is key engagement technique because it focuses the audience on this specific moment and then relieves them because of the safety of the kid which engages them even more and leaves them hooked onto this movie and wondering about the next scene.
