Find at least three different print examples (adverts, DVD packaging etc.) for Ill Manors. Post the images up on your blog and answer the following questions for each text:
 
  • What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
-The Ill Manors title is a clear title with big bold writing in the middle of the main characters chest. That is the main mark of recognition for the movie and is the basically the brand image because it is shown all around to be promoted in the same form and font that is shown on this print.
-The central image is of the main character holding a weapon(gun) and dressed in an urban and ghetto manner. 
-The print shows many different quotes on the side from magazines, artist etc. This is a very vital key convention to a print because it promotes the movie in a way because the ratings and reviews will benefit ill manors because it is advising potential viewers to view this and persuades them because it promotes the fact that it is a "BRILLIANT" or "A MUST SEE" movie which attracts people who are willing to spend money to go and see this British urban drama.

The title is one design feature that helps the audience identify the Ill Manors brand. The title for this  is identical to the title in the magazine cover and in the movie they keep the font and the size of the title the same or similar. This is because it is a brand that should be recognised by the audience and the way it is written helps the audience identify the brand of Ill Manors itself.

The colour scheme is another design feature that relates and links to the brand the colour scheme of black and grey which are dull colours that are based around the movie so that is a design feature that shows recognition and helps the audience see and identify the brand of Ill Manors
 
  • What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
Both examples that were shown show a similarity in the brand. This means that the title and many other stuff are all written in the same way and font so that the brand can be identified and both examples show the same link in that aspect.

The familiar and well recognised font that is shown on all other print adverts. The font of the Ill Manors title is written in the same font throughout the whole promotion and advertising of the film. This consistency in design is very professional and also helps the audience recognise and point out the film. The recognition of this will help promote the movie because the brands popularity will increase which will bring the film more success by the audience and fans of the movie.
 
What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
 
Yes, the whole concept of the design shows a link f the central image and the design of the title behind the central image of the character and in the case above the title is in front of the character so there you can see a consistency in design but rotated in terms of position.
 
What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
 
The title helps the audience identify the text in its font because it shows a constant font throughout other print promotions. The central image is of the artist and director Plan B himself so this will obviously be a sign of recognition for the audience because his fans that listen to his music will know him and will listen to his music so the album will promote his movie. Also the institution that has made the movie is at the top of the central image which is also a sign of recognition that the audience may identify.

Again, you can clearly see and recognise the title on this print cover. The font is again the same and is based in the middle of the page for the audience to recognise the movie as Plan B fans and this helps promotion and advertising. Also, all the main and key characters of the movie are all placed in the print to promote the movie and help the audience feel a sense of identification of the characters involved with the film Ill Manors.

The consistency in design show a link. The title is written in the same way and the image is placed under or next to the title in the other print examples.
 
What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
 
The title  is one key convention that helps you identify the print text and it is on top of the image in big bold font as it is in the other print examples. Also the central image shows the characters involved in the movie this also is a key way that helps the audience identify this texts. You can clearly see the characters and the audience would have already been introduced to the characters from other platforms i.e. a trailer and this print shows images of the key characters in the movie so this helps the audience identify them. There is also a quote at the very top of the print example to show a review of the movie which is a way that Ill Manors promote and advertise their movie this persuades the audience to go and watch it because they've been told that it was an 'incredible' movie.

Men's Health Interview-

The target audience for this magazine in terms of pyschographics would be the admirers, this is because they are the people who want to be fit and healthy therefore they would want to read the magazine, and in terms of demographics it would be aimed at ABC1 18-30 year old men who are health concious. The article main purpose is to entertain but it does more than just entertain, it also informs the readers. There are codes and conventions of central image, title etc.




NME Magazine

The core audience for this magazine is an average of age 25. The magazine targets men ages 17-30. They are predominantly male with 73%. 73% belong to the social grade ABC1. this articles purpose is to entertain the audience. there are quotes and a central image which are part of the key conventions for the magazine.



Guardian Interview 

‘When you’re a kid, you just want to be normal. But I knew I was different …’ Plan B the average number of younger people buying the newspaper daily is 615 000, surprisingly higher than the amount of readers over 45 years of age, which is somewhere around 590 000. The Guardian's purpose with this article Is probably to entertain considering the Guardia's normal issue and article. There is the central image and the title which are key conventions for any magazine.
 
GQ Magazine
 
The age range for GQ magazine is generally 21-35 or so. But I think the magazine is also known for reaching men at the ages of 50+. GQ does both in terms of entertaining and informing. You can kind of look at it as a guide to living a certain "lifestyle". Or in other words, living a sophisticated lifestyle regardless of income level. It follows the key conventions for any magazine in terms of a title cover lines etc.

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?


The dvd extras tell us a numerous of things from watching this behind the scenes DVD extras,we get a better understanding of what Plan B's intention in the making of the film and what he wished to achieve. Plan B is attempts to express his values, morals and opinions about how the media is corrupt and deceiving when they're speaking about the youth in Britain. Also, he wants the media and people who believe the media to understand that if the youth are looked down on and neglected they are going to react in a particular way i.e. the riots which have attracted many critics.


2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

Plan B chose to recruit inexperienced actors, choosing teens from the gritty locations to give them an opportunity as well as enhancing the authenticity of the film. His experience as a debut film director was was positively described as he resulted to this role from working on short films with other film-makers who have experienced this before. The documentary also included anecdotes of negative experiences the production crew had to deal with in the project and other issues they had to confront. The process of acquiring a budget and support from a film production company was also highlighted through the credit crunch crisis as well as the difficulty of granting Plan B the directorial responsibility because of his lack of experience

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?


One of the actors, Ed Skrein states that the target audience should be 'everyone who wasn't rioting' in the 2011 London riots. This is justified with the intention to raise awareness and empathy for young people of the lower social class demographic as they are provoked into rioting because of their insufficient upbringing and lifestyles.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.


Plan b's intentions for this film was to speak out for the youths who are marginalised in society and looked down upon by the media for being the negative people in London, he wanted his film to be as natural as possible by shooting the main scenes in the area he grew up in and local actors, the reason for this is that the film would come out more naturally rather than having other actors having to adapt to this environment.

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?


This is a short clip created by SBTV to show the audience what happens 'behind the scenes' when creating Plan B's film Ill Manors. This shows that Plan B wishes to make this movie a big hit because of his dedication that is shown throughout the clip. We see this in Plan B's mission to stay awake while working on the movie this shows his dedication and will to get this movie going. Also, he also says that he sleeps in the same room on the floor so that he doesn't waste time and is able to make working as productive as possible.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
We as the audience learn that the majority of the production of Ill Manors is done by Plan B the director himself. We also learn that the production isn't as glamorous as it seems because it shows hardship and struggle when producing and creating the film. The audience know this because he says he has to sleep on the floor to make sure 'this gets done'.

SB.TV Global Ltd, also known as SB.TV or SmokeyBarz, is a multi-faceted company run by a small team of young people who work on web-based viral content at different music-based events. The media platform has its origins and roots in urban music. Most of its content can be seen on its own YouTube channel, which was created on 2 November 2006, or on the official SB.TV website. Much of the content includes unprofessional footage, or "street-shot" freestyle raps and music videos. However, even though its earlier uploaded videos contained entirely amateur footage, the channel's latest uploads contain professional recordings.

It was Jamal Edwards' dedication that allowed this channel to gain success. Jamal Edwards founded the channel in 2006 when he was only a teenager and started to progress quickly because of the originality of his idea.

2) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?

It would have to be teenagers or young adults because it was produced by SBTV who wish or hope to attract a similar type audience. Also the humour and comedy used throughout the clip of Sean sneaking in when he isn't allowed to creates a sense of humour that teenagers can relate to or will find entertaining. 

3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B is presented as a dedicated character because of his state when trying to create and produce the film Ill Manors. From the clip you can see his dedication clearly because he is sleeping in the same room he works at and sleeps in his shoes which shows his dedication to complete the movie. He says that he has been working like a dog the simile creates an effective image for the audience because it shows them how hard and dedicated he is in producing his movie.

The Jonathan Ross Show is a British talk show presented by Jonathan Ross. It was first broadcast on ITV on 3 September 2011 and airs on Saturday evenings following the conclusion of Ross' BBC One chat show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, in July 2010.

Jonathan Ross seems to challenge the ideologies in his show and always seemed to challenge this in his shows which lead to a fired up controversy.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

This interview appeals to the higher class of people I can instantly say this because of Plan B's clothing tells us that this was a formal interview considering that Ben Drew is a rapper and came from what you would call the 'hood' so is more informal than usual and doesn't usually dress smartly because of his personality. Also the show usually features more higher class people and not usually people like Ben Drew. Also, the language Ben Drew uses tells the reader he is reaching for the politics and powerful people out there because of his formal language.
3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?


The Jonathan Ross show attracts the affluent audience because of the people that are brought on to the show every episode but also the channel which is ITV 4 attracts the mainstream audience that watch free view TV. 
4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?


Plan B is presented as a dedicated and hard working character that is more formal than he actually is because Plan B is able to adjust to situations and can control his colloquial language and only use it in appropriate.

BBC Radio 1 is a British radio station operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts internationally, specialising in modern and current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie or interviews. It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33.

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?


It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33. This shows although the target audience is 15-29 there will be people that listen to it out of this age range whether that be older or younger.

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?


Plan B talks about the production of the film to promote it is attracting a lot of his fans as an artist because he takes responsibility for most of it and speaks about his role in the film as a director. Plan B does most of the production throughout his creation of Ill Manors. Also, the radio play his track in the interview which promotes his movie because it is made for the movie and is meant promote and advertise the movie through Plan B's music.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

In this interview we see Plan B differently because we see/hear the 'real' him because he talks about his life aside the movie and links it because he talks about losing weight throughout the production of Ill Manors. This makes the audience see him differently because he is seen as a normal person. This is because celebrities are portrayed as glamorous and superior which gives them a label of difference whereas Plan B is portrayed as a normal person with a usual lifestyle.

Ill Manors TEDx Lecture 

1) Make notes on the lecture: focus on Plan B/Ben Drew's views on the opportunities for young people in London and how these inspired Ill Manors.

Plan B/Ben Drew speaks about the youths lack of opportunities in society today. Ben Drew believes that the youth are unfortunate because society has deserted them from the rest and hasn't allowed them to be part of society and hasn't given them enough opportunities to be equal to others in society. Plan B's main purpose of creating the movie Ill Manors is to get in touch and involved with the youth as well as inform society. We know this because Ben drew says in his lecture he wanted to 'represent these character in a real way' and he couldn't have 'a 14 year old boy who isn't from this world to portray this world' what he meant by this was that the children with opportunities couldn't play those parts because it wouldn't seem real. Also, by attracting the right characters this also has helped them to become more involved with their dreams as 'disadvantaged youth'. Ben Drew shares an anecdote from the creation of Ill Manors when one of the boys who auditioned didn't get the part he motivated him to carry on and it paid off because he became the main character in the British TV series Top Boy. Ben Drew also believes that when the youth are given opportunities it is always ripped away. He speaks about the community centres that have been closed down which have helped youth stay away from trouble and gave them something to do. This summarises Ben Drew's point of the disadvantaged youth that have been damaged because of society.

2) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.

Ben Drew's view of politics is very negative I know this because he mentions this in his soundtrack for the Ill Manors movie. Plan B as an artist speaks about David Cameron's 'Hug A Hoodie' campaign that was put in place to empathise with the youth instead of separating them from society. However, Ben Drew believes that the whole campaign was an 'act' and was only done so that he can gain votes and supporters from the wider market who are unaware that he only does it for his benefit as a politician. He also believes that the government do not support the youth because he mentions 'council estate kid scum of the earth' which was a newspaper headline this creates a major stereotype that council estate children are 'scum's' or are criminals of a somewhat 'perfect society'.


3) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

The target audience surprisingly are the older generation or the politicians themselves. I know this because of the audience from the TEDx lecture were mostly older adults. I think Ben Drew has purposely planned to aim this at those because they are the people that seem to 'demonise' the youth. Also, he believes that they are the people that have the power to change the youths' lives by making a change in areas where there are the most disadvantaged. I know this because Ben Drew also speaks about the fact that 'every person watching the lecture knows one person who is less fortunate than them that they can help'. The Target audience for the actual movie is different because it is made more to entertain the audience rather than inform. Whereas, the whole concept of the film is to inform and that is why the lecture shows a different audience because it is aimed at adults with power and able to make change for the youth today. The lecture may be aimed at the resigned because one of the characteristics is 'authoritarian' this means they claim power and authority which means they will be able to help Ben Drew in making a change because they dominant and demand charge. 



4) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics? Read this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.

Plan B talks about the media as if they are evil. He also says that the media 'demonises' the youth and portrays them to be devilish and criminals. Plan B shares an anecdote from the creation of Ill Manors. In the story what had happened was that the crew were filming and they were told to leave by the gangsters that were in charge of the road. However another group of boys said no they aren't leaving and told them to 'do their thing'. This was a very moving story because it meant that the youth in today look out for one another because they are united. However the media which was the newspapers they managed to twist the story because they left out the part in which the youth helped the crew film their project. Ben Drew showed real emotion and feeling towards this because he was very disappointed in the fact that the newspapers didn't include to what he described the' best part of the story'. Overall, Ben Drew feels the media is very quick to judge and bring hate towards the youth but aren't able to deliver credit when it is due in this case the helping of the youth to allow Ill Manors to continue.
